Half a century ago, a diagnosis of childhood leukaemia meant certain death; today, four out of five children can be successfully treated. The survival prospects of many other cancer patients have also improved massively over the last 50 years. For most types of cancer, medicine can now ensure high cure rates or many symptom-free years. Research has contributed a great deal to these successes.
At the same time, it is important not to forget: There are still types of cancer with a very poor prognosis. These tumours resist therapy or grow so quickly that they are only discovered when it is almost too late. Those affected often die within a few months.
Such rapid disease progression causes a lot of suffering - for those affected and their relatives. Each of these deaths is one too many. Help us to advance research in this area and save lives.
